The final figure in their group was unquestionably a dwarf. His thick limbs and broad shoulders spoke of a man who had spent time underground, mining for minerals, and his unruly russet beard obscured half of his face. The eyes that peaked through, however, were kind and gently, a sparkling shade of blueish grey.

‘Magnus, companion to Greer.’ He stretched out a rough hand to shake one of hers, whilst indicated with his other the mahogany dragon behind him. She in turn bowed her head to Adairia who returned the gesture once she had been freed from Magnus’ strong grip.

‘I am pleased to meet you both,’ she offered before turning her attention to the rest of the gathered dragons.

‘I am Asha, caraid bheag,’ spoke the largest dragon, her hide a brilliant gold. ‘Ode is my companion.’ Her voice had a soothing cadence that Adairia would not have associated with the deep grumbles she knew dragons to usually make.

‘Tarin, companion to Bar,’ added the dragon on her left whose own scales mimicked the leaves of an oak tree when seen in the gloom of night. Despite his size Adairia had no doubt he would be a difficult to spot if come across in the forest.

‘Call me Callan.’ The last dragon to introduce himself bared his teeth in what Adairia had now come to recognise as the dragon equivalent of a grin. ‘It is so wonderful to meet Fia and her companion. None of us expected another dragon hatching to happen in most of our lifetimes. It’s so exciting.’ Adairia did not need to ask who Callan’s companion was. If it were not made clear by process of elimination already, she would have guessed that the animated dragon before her, rattling of sentences without taking a breath in between, was bonded with the beaming Aftab.

‘Everyone has been telling me all about their adventures together. They couldn’t believe I have only been up in the air once, and on Tearlach’s back.’ Fia now pressed forward to rub her muzzle against Adairia’s forehead as she stroked the dragon’s neck in return. ‘I cannot wait to fly Adairia.’
